Biography

Mortals hails from Brooklyn’s fast-growing and dynamic heavy-music scene. Their sound is an original concoction of the black metal, stoner-swamp-sludge and doom metal that excites and inspires all three members (Elizabeth Cline, guitar & vocals; Lesley Wolf, bass &vocals; Caryn Havlik, drums.) As this trio incarnation, the band started touring in 2010, hauling gear into basements, sleeping on floors, slugging Jameson, and ingratiating themselves to all sorts of unexpected metal havens across the East Coast, South, and Midwest. Individual transformations through this time (more listening and a whole bunch of practice) led to a more coherent evil whole, and they wrote and self released 2012’s Death Ritual EP. MSN’s Headbang blog called the album “a revelation” and an “engrossing and devastating version of modern metal.” Meat Mead Metal described their “complex, expansive songs” as “massive and crushing.”

The metamorphosis in Mortals’ sound has been an incredible evolution, solidified by the trio’s completely unique take on blackened sludge. But, ultimately, Mortals are just three friends who have been in bands together for a long time, and have found a common passion in making heavy music with one another, anchored by their combined love for loudness, fiascos, travel, animals, and making new friends.
